Dhaka University Microbiology Alumni Association (DUMAA)
By the late 1990s a few eager microbiology graduates including a few of our young faculty members took activity to make an appropriate and potential platform for the graduate and the present students to be aware of the progressing upgrades within the field of Microbiology and thereby resolving their issues with respect to work and research opportunities in the field as well to initiate programs and organize occasions imperative to the graduates, their alma mater, and in the national intrigued. On impact the “Graduate Microbiologists Association” (GMA) was established in 1997 with its first President Dr. Munirul Alam.
In early 2000, a group of ex-students dwelling within the USA made an overseas-based alumni association to ensure that the alumni can keep in touch with one another and remain associated with their alma mater, and additionally to cater to the extending alumni base around the globe. It was registered in late 2000 as “Dhaka University Microbiology Alumni Association” (DUMAA), Maryland (USA), Incorporation, and Dr. Akhtaruzzaman Molla was its founder President.
Within the same year, when the Department was arranged to celebrate its milestone 20th anniversary, a thought to make an Alumni Association for all its graduates was spawned so that our alumni would be actively involved to celebrate the commemoration. Eventually, a convening committee for the formation of DU-based alumni association- “Dhaka University Microbiology Department Alumni Association” (DUMDAA) was established, where Professor Dr. Md. Majibur Rahman was its founder President, in expectation to form an ad hoc committee later Highest on their minds, at that point as presented, was to remain associated with each other to bring great to the Department.
The Department of Microbiology had celebrated its 40th Founding Anniversary on the 27th of December, 2019. It was indeed, a grand and memorable occasion for both the current and the former students of the department. Enthralled by the huge participation of our alumni from home and abroad, one of the greatest works ever done by the alumni was the establishment of a unified and common platform for all our alumni regardless of where they live.
All the alumni and the current students endorsed the notion put forward by Dr. Akter Molla (who was the student of the 1st MS batch of Microbiology Department) that from henceforth, there will be a unified platform of our alumni and that will be called Dhaka University Microbiology Alumni Association (abbreviated as DUMAA). All the alumni unanimously adopted this resolution by raising their hands and big round of applause.
It was decided that DUMAA will be based in the Department of Microbiology, University of Dhaka. Professor Dr. Md. Majibur Rahman and Professor Dr. Sabita Rezwana Rahman were elected as the President and the General Secretary respectively of the newly formed DUMAA and they formed the Executive Committee (ad hoc) of DUMAA by accommodating all stakeholders as assigned by the alumni. It was also decided in the meeting that the alumni living abroad can open up a chapter of DUMAA in their respective countries. However, to avoid any conflict of interest, they must seek written permission from the DUMAA based in the Department. In this respect, we must thank DUMAA-USA for their wholehearted initiative and cooperation in forming this unified platform of DUMAA. The constitution of DUMAA will be formed accordingly. The office space of DUMAA has been allocated at the Department of Microbiology, DU by the Coordination and Development Committee (C&D) of the Department at its meeting on 6.9.2020, as applied by the Professor Dr. Md. Majibur Rahman, President DUMAA.
